The residents of Ram Nagar Channa village near here staged a dharna in front of the mini-secretariat here on Monday to protest against what they described as the district administration's failure to act on their complaints of illegal encroachments in their village.

The agitators parked tractor=-trolleys in front of the complex and raised slogans against officials of the district administration. Narinder Pal Singh Khanna, who was leading the protest, said in spite of orders of the Punjab and Haryana high court, Sangrur district panchyat officer had failed to remove illegal encroachments, putting local residents to "a lot of inconvenience".

He threatened of not lifting protest unless and until, any stern action will be taken against erring officials. Deputy commissioner Kumar Rahul, meanwhile, said the matter was in court, therefore nothing much could be commented on the issue. He said Dhuri sub-divisional magistrate has been instructed to look into the matter.
