The members from two groups from Fatehgarh Gujaran village entered into a violent scuffle at block development and panchayat office (BDPO) at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) on Monday, leaving at least six people, including a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) sarpanch, injured.
Though both of the groups filed complaints against each other in this context, the PAU police have lodged the complaint following the statement of brother of the SAD sarpanch.

The incident happened when both the groups had gathered at the BDPO office following an inquiry over the embezzlement of funds allocated for development of the village.

In his complaint, Surinder Kumar, brother of sarpanch Gopal Das, alleged that he, along with his brother and other supporters, came to the BDPO office for the inquiry but the rival group members, already present at the office, assaulted them with sharp-edged weapons and sticks.

Kumar, his brother and another member of the group have suffered injuries.

Meanwhile, police have booked Dharamvir, Lucky, Sohan Lal, Ashok Kumar, Amarjit Singh, Darshan Lal and Gurdial Singh.

However, Dharamvir of the same village stated he had also filed a complaint against the panchayat for the embezzlement of funds. He said that on Tuesday, when they came to the BDPO office to record their statement, the sarpanch and his accomplices assaulted them. During the attack, he along with two others also suffered injuries. He also alleged police had been favoring the SAD sarpanch.

Meanwhile, sub-inspector Surinder Chopra, station house officer (SHO) at PAU police station, PAU, said police had also been considering the complaint filed by the other group.
