A video going viral on social media revealed on Tuesday that a 17-year-old boy was assaulted naked, and an iron rod inserted in his rectum, by some villagers to purportedly avenge his alleged act of sodomy with their children, in Bachra village on the outskirts of Tarn Taran.
Though the assault took place on May 31, hours after a compromise was struck, the family of the victim complained to the police on Tuesday, and a case was registered under section 377 (unnatural intercourse) of the Indian penal Code (IPC) against four persons related to each other, said Piara Singh, deputy superintendent of Police (city). All four — Harpal Singh, Balwinder Singh, Gobind Singh and Baljinder Kaur, residents of Chamba Kalan — are absconding and their houses are locked.
The boy, who belongs to a Dalit caste, was reportedly on the radar of the alleged assaulters, who are from the dominant Jat caste, after he was found having had unnatural sex with their children repeatedly. A complaint was made by the family, but the police pushed for a compromise, it is learnt. The teenager’s mother acknowledged that the compromise was struck but not honoured, and the teenager was assaulted hours later the same day. The complaint was made after the video evidence emerged.
