With the Chhatbir Zoo planning to celebrate the National Wildlife Week from October 3-8, visitors could be in for a rude surprise and a long walk as the battery-operated golf cart service provided to patrons at a nominal fee stands discontinued. The zoo management did not renew the contract of the company providing the service after the expiry of the agreement on September 30.
Confirming the development, range officer Bahlinder Singh said, “We did not give an extension to the previous contractor as several complaints had been received against his conduct. A new tender will be floated and till we find a new service provider, golf carts would be hired on a temporary basis. We expect that the service would be offered again from October 3.”
Visitors, however, have not taken well to the move.
“I was looking forward to taking a ride on the golf cart as I had heard a lot about it. I also brought my little toddler with me and it has been difficult to enjoy the visit while carrying the child in my lap. I am very disappointed,” said Daljit Singh, a native of Bathinda, adding that the service should be started as soon as possible.
“With the wildlife week on, offering the services of a golf cart is definitely a must for the zoo authorities,” said another visitor, not wishing to be named.
Interestingly, the zoo authorities have invited more 50 schools to participate in the inaugural function of its wildlife week celebrations.
