The tehbazari wing for the first time towed away brand new high-end vehicles from an exhibition at Sarabha Nagar market on Sunday evening, as the organisers failed to take any permission to organise the event.

The tehbazari wing of Zone D, under superintendent Jasdev Sekhon, reached the spot and seized Vento and Polo cars of Volkswagon company. Both vehicles were towed away to Zone D office of the MC.

As per officials, the Sarabha Nagar Market Association had charged more than `15,000 from the company, but did not deposit the requisite fee with the tehbazari wing.

The association has also come under flak for not following rules whenever such exhibitions are held. Sekhon said that the exhibition was going on without permission on the MC land.

“They should have deposited the requisite fee with the MC before holding an exhibition,” Sekhon said.

He said that in future also they would make it a point to check that no such exhibitions are organised without permission as they cause problem to the general publics.

Sekhon said that the market association charges fee from such exhibitions by claiming that they would use it for the welfare of the market. “I will also take up the matter with higher officials, as to how an association can charge money for conducting an exhibition on government land?” Sekhon said.

However, no one from the market association was available for comments. Chairman of the market association Wang Jenn did not pick his phone when HT made repeated attempts to call him.

A shopkeeper at Sarabha Nagar market said that the area has been encroached upon by rehri and cart pullers.

“By the evening the area is full with unauthorised people running their business on encroached land without any fear as they pay the market association for it. This causes problems to those who visit the market,” the shopkeeper said.

Meanwhile, non-action of the tehbazari wing against encroachers has also raised a question mark on the working of the MC.

Meanwhile, no official from the car company visited the MC office to release the impounded cars, whose two front tyres got punctured.
