The Punjab government has started a scheme to provide free bicycles to the children of construction workers in the state. Children of all those labourers, who are registered with the Punjab Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, would be eligible to avail of the benefit, Batala assistant labour commissioner Iqbal Singh Sidhu said here on Sunday.

The scheme covers only the registered labourers' children from Classes 9 to 12, who have also been awarded scholarships from the board, Sidhu said. It is a one-time benefit and can be availed only once throughout the four years of study.

Sidhu said the process of becoming a beneficiary of this scheme had been simplified and did not involve getting approval from sub-divisional magistrate or deputy commissioner but just from the assistant labour commissioner.
