Waste management plant tenders delayed yet again.
In spite of garbage piling across the city, the municipal corporation again failed to float tenders for the solid waste management plant on Thursday. The tenders are now likely to be floated on Friday.
In spite of garbage piling across the city, the municipal corporation again failed to float tenders for the solid waste management plant on Thursday. The tenders are now likely to be floated on Friday.
In a meeting held at Chandigarh a few days ago, it was decided that the tenders for the `72-crore door-to-door garbage collection project would be floated on Thursday. Under this project, approximately 650 tonne of garbage would be collected from Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Jandiala and Patti.
This, in spite of the fact that after approving the project, the Punjab and Haryana high court had given the MC six months to hire a firm. However, the MC authorities denied that the delay had occurred due to laxity of their officials.
Municipal commissioner DPS Kharbanda said that the tenders would be floated by Friday, adding, "This is not a button that you can press at your convenience to make things happen. Such projects take time to materialise. The tenders would be floated on Friday."
Following member of parliament Navjot Singh Sidhu's exposure of the failure of the MC to go ahead with projects whose foundation stones had been laid, Kharbanda had earlier issued a statement that tenders for the project would be floated on September 23.
However, the date was extended to October 7, extended to October 10, extended to October 11.
"Floating tenders is not everything. We are taking every possible measure to ensure that the project gets underway soon," Kharbanda claimed.
