Residents of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar foiled a 55-year-old man's alleged bid to rape a five-year-old girl in a park on Monday evening.

Passers-by caught the accused and handed him to Sarabha Nagar police.

The accused has been identified as Tulsi Ram of Shingara Colony of Phullanwal village. The Sarabha Nagar police have booked him for attempt to rape under sections 376/511 of the Indian Penal Code ( IPC).

The case has been registered following the complaint of Ramandeep Singh of J-Block of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar.

In his complaint, Ramandeep said on Monday, while talking over the phone, he went towards the park, and suddenly heard screams of a child.

When he went inside the park, he was shocked to see the accused trying to rape a minor girl. The accused had already taken her clothes off. He raised an alarm and called on his friends, who nabbed the accused and sounded the police.

Inspector Harpal Singh, station house officer (SHO) at Sarabha Nagar police station said the accused, a watchman, hailed from Nepal.

The SHO said on Monday, he was roaming around Sunet village where he found the victim playing in the street. The accused lured her with candies and brought her to the park, he added.

The accused was produced before the court that sent him to Ludhiana central jail on judicial remand for 14 days.
