Wearing helmet while riding a motorcycle is mandatory for all - except turbaned person; however, in Batala, this norm has gone for a toss, as hardly any motorcyclist abide by it.
The apathetic approach of the traffic police to strictly enforce the law in the city was not only resulting in increasing number of severe injuries and accidental deaths, but also creating unlawfulness.
Only recently, two youths were killed on the spot when their motorcycle was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Urban Estate.
In another case, 21-year-old Anchal Arora of Gopal Nagar was killed after receiving severe injuries on head when his motorcycle was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Baring College on the night of November 30.
According to information, half a dozen persons, including three youngsters, riding motorcycle were killed in separate incidents of road accident in the city in the last 15 days. The figure could have been low if they would have worn helmet.
The problem is further complicated by non-availability of helmet even at a single shop here. Even most of the motorcycle agencies do not sell helmet.
Traffic police incharge TP Singh was not available for comments.
Batala senior superintendent of police (SSP) SS Mand admitted that so far police had not enforced the helmet rule in the city, but it would be enforced immediately. He said police were going to constitute a special team to smoothen the traffic.
Due to the apathetic attitude of the police, the law was not enforced in the city so far.
Sandeep Datta, advocate
The police should accept the moral responsibility behind all those deaths that had happened due to non-enforcement of this law
Shiv Sanan, social activist
When the helmets are not available in the city shops, what is our fault?
Ajay Rekhi, student
The law will be enforced immediately.
