Misuse of social media has been cursed for adding fuel in fire over the disturbed law and order situation of Punjab, but some people have been using the social platform for betterment of the society. Members of a WhatsApp group informed police about a newborn girl that was found abandoned by a rag picker woman from garbage.
The woman has taken the abandoned girl to her home. Many people were pressurising the woman for giving the newborn to them.
The division number 7 police have recovered the newborn from the woman and handed over to an orphanage being run by Swami Ganga Nand Bhuri Wale International Foundation Dham, Talwandi Khurd, after administrating medical treatment at the civil hospital on Tuesday.
Inspector Sumit Sood, SHO at police station division number 7, said they have got the information about the newborn girl that was found abandoned at the industrial area through a city resident. The police acted swiftly and traced the newborn to Sanjay Gandhi Colony.
A rag picker woman Anita was taking care of the newborn. She already has three daughters and was taking care of the girl without discrimination. The woman was reluctant to hand over the girl to the police, as she was seeing her as incarnation of goddess Durga because she had found the newborn during Navratras. She said she found the girl from a garbage dump at the Focal Point area.
The police have convinced her to handover the newborn to them and taken her to the civil hospital for a medical treatment. After that the newborn was handed over to an orphanage.
Pritpal Singh Sandhu, who is admin of the WhatsApp group of alumni of Wylie Memorial School, said some members have posted information about the abandoned girl. He took up the matter and informed the police division number 7 through an advocate friend. He is happy that with their efforts the newborn has got a new lease of life.
The SHO said as the area from where the abandoned girl was recovered lies under Focal Point police station. He has informed the Focal point police to take further action.
