She did it on April Fools’ Day, but it wasn’t really clear whom she was fooling. Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the sulking-for-long Amritsar-East MLA, posted on her Facebook page around 9am on Friday: “Finally, I have resigned from (the) BJP. The burden is over.”
As Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders started dialling phones and journalists even got to her residence, her staff went from claiming that her FB profile had been hacked, to saying that she had played a prank. She remained incommunicado as the staff said she was out “for some work”.
But not everyone was convinced since Dr Sidhu and her cricketer-politician husband Navjot Singh Sidhu, a three-time former Amritsar MP, have been vocal against the BJP’s ruling partner Shiromani Akali Dal, even expressly against chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal. Not long ago, she had given loud hints of gravitating towards the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) “if the BJP stayed on with the SAD”.
Well, true to form, Dr Sidhu, a chief parliamentary secretary (CPS) in the SAD-BJP regime, was not done for the day.
Around 2pm, she posted some more of her apparent anger towards the SAD and Badal on Facebook, wherein she alleged that the Amritsar Improvement Trust was not utilising Rs 79 crore released for her constituency; she slammed CM Badal for making “false promises” and then went on to play the nepotism card, offering to vacate her seat for Badal’s relatives.
The post read, “79 cr sanctioned for Amritsar East, tenders placed since a month.. Improvement trust computers not working properly since 20 days..... Site hacked by lords in Chandigarh to delay work orders. Badal Sahib, you promised moon to the people of Amritsar...... Don’t deny them basic needs. Don’t abuse the word ‘daughter’ and ‘sister’. I am ready to vacate my seat for your relatives. (sic)”
After this, too, her phone remained switched off till the filing of this report around 8.30pm.
Meanwhile, state BJP chief Kamal Sharma, when contacted, said, “I have not received any communication of any sort from her. No resignation has been sent to me.”
