Harvinder Singh Phoolka, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Ludhiana, on Wednesday dismissed speculation about seeking to contest from Chandigarh.
He claimed that his opponents were behind the rumours as they were developing cold feet due to the AAP’s growing popularity in Ludhiana. “I joined the AAP to contest the elections only from Ludhiana as I have always considered it my home,” Phoolka said.
Ever since Jaspal Bhatti’s widow Savita Bhatti withdrew her candidature as the AAP candidate from Chandigarh, speculation was rife that Phoolka might shift from Ludhiana.
However, the Supreme Court lawyer stated that his purpose of joining the party was to ensure that Ludhiana was not excluded from the AAP revolution that had swept Delhi.
“The AAP central leadership and Arvind Kejriwal will never go against my decision,” Phoolka added.
Phoolka has old ties with Ludhiana. He and his wife both studied at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), while the latter also taught at PAU. He also got his pilot’s licence from the Ludhiana Flying Club.
