The Punjab unit president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Vijay Sampla, has said that the party will approach all deras in the state, seeking support for the SAD-BJP alliance in the assembly polls.
“We will go to the deras in full public view. We will go to each one of them, even if their ideology doesn’t match with ours,” Sampla said at a meeting with journalists here on Tuesday.
“There are 582 deras which Scheduled Castes have faith in and numerous others belong to people of other castes and religions. Even if a dera has a following of four people, we will not like to miss it,” he said.
Speaking on BJP’s prospects in the polls, Sampla said the party was improving fast and was “no longer a weak contender”. He said they will hold a meeting with the leadership of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to finalise the seat-sharing. As per reports, the BJP and SAD are willing to swap four seats this time.
Sampla said they will send full-time workers to all the 23 constituencies the BJP will field candidates from, three to four months before the polls to oversee preparedness. “Our people are committed and they will stay in the constituencies through the elections. I have asked for a list of volunteers who can spare time,” he said.
