The kidnapping of seven-year-old-Gurdeep Singh Gopi has become puzzling to the police, it appears, as they are coming up with different theories, in the lack of a lead in the case.
Even two days after Gopi's kidnapping by an unidentified man in a white Alto car, the police are groping in the dark, without a single lead.
Moreover, police commissioner Yurinder Singh Hayer and his team have made many visits to the field since Sunday, but to no avail.
The city police has also surveyed footages of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in two houses near Rainbow Park, from where the boy was kidnapped on the evening of October 12.
Two people recalled the kidnapper as a clean shaven man, from when the car when to the Model Town Market. Using inputs from them, the police team prepared a sketch of the kidnapper and circulated it among the stations of the region, on Tuesday.
Gopi's sister Manpreet (11) had also seen the kidnapper as the two of them were playing in Rainbow Park when the boy was abducted. But, her inputs about the kidnapper's identity have created confusion in the process of preparing the sketch.
Both Manpreet and the two people also said they had seen the man in the area many times. Residents of the locality also told the police that the kidnapper was seen clicking Gopi's pictures a few days ago. From this, the police gathered that the kidnapper must be familiar to Gopi.
The teams are also trying to access CCTV footages from various toll plazas on the Jalandhar-Ludhiana, Jalandhar-Amritsar and Jalandhar-Pathankot roads to see whether the kidnapper left the state.
A senior police official of the investigating team said the family had not received a call demanding for ransom yet. Coupled with the fact that the family denied rivalry with anyone has made the case even more mysterious, said the official.
Meanwhile, Gopi's family has been distributing posters and pamphlets with his picture, and seeking residents' help.
The abduction took place outside Rainbow Park in Model Town when Gopi had gone there to play with his sister on Sunday evening.
