Woman alleges police inaction in molestation by sarpanch

punjab Updated: Aug 23, 2014 22:46 IST

A resident of Charaksingh village under Maur police station has alleged police inaction against the village sarpanch, who had allegedly molested her.

The 22-year-old woman said that sarpanch of the village Manjit Singh used to harass her by blocking her way or teasing her.
She alleged that on the evening of August 20, the sarpanch came to her house at about 7:30 pm when I was with my mother-in-law Karamjit Kaur in the house and molested her. She said her husband was not home at that time.

"When my mother-in-law intervened, the sarpanch beat her up."

She said that a complaint was lodged at Maur police station the next day, but the police have not registered any case in the incident so far.

Maur SHO Gursher Singh said that the sarpanch, in his statement, recorded before the police, has said that he had gone to the woman's house in connection with a dispute of the family with another family of the village, and the woman has levelled false allegations against him. He said that the police were, however, inquiring into the matter.
