A woman attempted to immolate herself in a bid to pressurise the authorities of a local college to issue roll number to her daughter, a student of BA-I, who failed to achieve the required percentage to appear in the final examination.
High drama was witnessed in the premises of Swaroop Rani Government College for Women on Friday when accused Anju Rani attempted to immolate herself after dousing kerosene over her body, to get her daughter's roll number.
However, the college authorities immediately called the police who arrested Anju Rani, a resident of Fateh Singh Colony, and registered a case against her under section 309 of IPC at Civil Lines police station. The case has been registered on the complaint of college principal Sunita Sehgal Dhillon.
According to the police officials, the daughter of the accused was a student of second semester of BA-I in the college. They added that the girl had fallen short of lectures because of which she was not issued her roll number for the final exams.
"On Thursday, the accused went to the college to try and coerce the college authorities to release her daughter's roll number, but the principal cited university norms, which called for at least 75% attendance in college," said Amritsar police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh.
DSP Balkar Singh said that the principal called the staff concerned and inquired from them about the girl's attendance in class on which she came to know that she had not attended even a single lecture throughout the semester.
"The accused was carrying with her some kerosene oil to threaten the college authorities with self immolation. On their refusal to release her daughter's roll number, she doused herself with kerosene oil," he said and added that the college authorities summoned the police, who arrested the woman.
