Woman burnt over property dispute

The Amritsar City Police have booked five persons including the parents-in-law, elder brother-in-law, elder sister-in-law and another person on charges of burning a woman on account of a property dispute in the family. The woman in question has reportedly sustained 60 percent burn injuries on her torso, but is said to be out of danger.

The accused have been identified as Sunita Dhawan, Ravi Dhawan, elder brother-in-law, elder sister-in-law, and Raj Rani and Ram Saroop Dhawan, Father and Mother-in-law and Ashwani Dhawan, all residents of Green Avenue.

The accused have been booked under sections 307/34 IPC in a case registered at Civil Lines Police Station on the complaint of Sonia Dhawan, the victim and also a resident of Green Avenue. The complainant alleged that the accused wanted to throw her out of the house and take over her property.

She maintained that on May 9 at about 3:30 pm her elder sister-in-law Sunita Dhawan poured kerosene oil on her and set her afire.Civil Lines Police Station ASI Sohan Lal, of who is investigating the matter, said that it was a case of property dispute.

"The complainant has sustained 60 percent burn injuries in the area below her neck, but she is out of danger," he said. He added that the case pertained to property dispute. "However, investigations are being held into the matter and efforts are being made to arrest the accused," said the ASI.
