A woman who allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan on August 17 was driven towards the extreme step after her husband posted a photograph of his girlfriend on facebook, revealed the police investigation.
The investigation in to the case had revealed that Kapil Dhawan husband of Shikha Dhawan, a resident of Shivrajgarh Mohalla had posted photographs of his girlfriend with whom he was living in South Africa on his daughters’ facebook account. He had also told Shikha about the girlfriend over the phone, a few days ago.
“Living without her husband for past three years, Shikha received a big shock and had gone under depression following which she committed suicide,” revealed sources. Police had registered a case for abatement to suicide against husband.
Married on January 28, 1999, Shikha was living separatly from her in-laws along with her daughter Prerna, a student of class 6 and son Nalin a student of class 4. The victim’s body was discovered by her children when they came back from school. Police investigations have revealed that Kapil had been booked for cheating cases here, due to which he was not coming back to India.
Meanwhile, the victims’ brother, Vinay Chaudhary had alleged that his sister was murdered by the in-laws and the crime was converted in to a suicide.
While talking to HT and demanding to register a case of murder against her in-laws, instead of abetement to suicide. Chaudhary, a native of Siliguri in West Bengal said that Shikha was living along with her children in a separate house for the past several years while her husband Kapil Dhawan was living in South Africa for the past three years.
On August 17 Ramesh Dhawan sister’s father in-law called me over phone and told that Shikha had died of a severe heart attack. However, after some time when I called at their home, another family member told me that Shikha had committed suicide by hanging herself.
“The family was in a hurry to cover up the crime and tried to cremate the body the same day, which was stopped after I warned them of not doing so. They had not even reported the matter to the police,” said Chaudhary. They told the police about the incident only after I warned them and the post mortem was conducted.
He alleged the police at the division number 3 police station were not willing to register a FIR for abetement to suicide. An FIR was registered only after Chaudhary approached the commissioner of police who directed the cops for registering a case in this connection.
Additional SHO, division number 3, Baljinder Singh said that a case for abetement to suicide has been registered against husband based on the investigation police had done in this connection till now.
“The in-laws are living separately for past 13 years. So no reason of murdering her arises and abetement to suicide has been registered against the husband only. The police were waiting for the post mortem report of the victim to go ahead in this case," Baljinder Singh said.
