A woman constable has accused her senior of threatening her after sexually exploiting her besides getting her transferred outside Mansa district.

Gurpreet Kaur, 43, has alleged that she was recently transferred to Barnala at the behest of SHO Manjeet Singh, who had earlier married her.

A couple of months ago, Gurpreet had alleged that the SHO, both then posted at Budhlada, had been sexually exploiting her. "When I asked for marriage, he suggested that we both convert to Islam and then marry as he was already married. We did that and married. But since he has not treated me as wife and has been threatening me and my family," alleged Gurpreet. She has the documents showing that the two converted to Islam and married.

She claimed that the police department had formed a committee to probe the issue, but to no effect. "The committee that comprised two women cops never spoke to me to get to the real issue. Rather, I was indirectly asked to reach a compromise and not to pursue the case. Manjeet and his wife have been threatening me since then," she said.

Gurpreet and the SHO's wife recently had a scuffle and both got minor injuries.

Gurpreet, whose late father also served in the state police, is the youngest among three sisters. "One of my elder sisters also serves in the Punjab Police, but it is disappointing that the department is not helping us."

But, senior officials blame the victim for the situation. "She keeps changing her stand. Now, she requests us to proceed in the case, but later she asks us not to probe it. We cannot do anything in such a situation," said SSP Bhupinder Singh Khattra.

When asked as to why she was transferred to Barnala, the SSP said the decision was taken by officials in Chandigarh.

The victim says, "Why should not I switch my stand when I and my family face a threat from the SHO."
Gurpreet alleges that the decision was taken under the influence of the SHO, who is trying to keep her away from Mansa so that the case doesn't move further.
