A woman delivered a premature stillborn baby on the road to a hospital, near Company Bagh here on Tuesday. She was stated to be in a serious condition later at the local government hospital. Her husband, an auto-rickshaw driver, alleged that his phone calls for an ambulance had gone unattended before they had left the house for the hospital.

Punam Rani, a resident of Guru Nanak Pura, seven months pregnant, accompanied by some relatives was being driven by her husband in his auto-rickshaw to the hospital for a check-up when she complained of labour pain. Two women with her and some passerby covered her with dupattas and helped her deliver the male child on the roadside.

Her husband, Kanu, said he had called up the number 108 for the government ambulance service before they left for the check-up visit, “but my phone calls went unanswered twice around 3pm”. They left home later and the delivery took place around 5pm. After the delivery, though, an ambulance arrived in moments and took her to the civil hospital.
