Woman ends life in Moga village, in-laws booked in dowry case

A married woman allegedly committed suicide by burning herself at Hariewala village under Baghapurana subdivision, 43 kilometres from here on Thursday morning.

Police officials said that the deceased has been identified as Mandeep Kaur (26).

Sukhdev Singh, assistant sub-inspector of Nathuwala Garbi police post, said that the victim's mother Parkash Kaur, a resident of Bathinda, complained to the police that her daughter Mandeep Kaur was married to Amar Singh of Hariewala two-and-a-half years ago.

"Family members of Amar Singh were not satisfied with the dowry that we had given and they had been demanding more money for the last two years. We visited Amar Singh's home several times with prominent residents to solve the problem but to no avail," the victim's mother mentioned in her complaint, said the police official.

The police said that, according to Parkash Kaur, she received a phone call from Hariewala on Thursday that Mandeep Kaur had burnt herself by pouring petrol on herself and was undergoing treatment at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot.

"As soon as we received the phone call, we reached the hospital immediately but Mandeep Kaur was declared dead by the doctors of in the emergency ward," said Parkash Kaur. After autopsy, the body handed over to family members.

"A case has been registered against the victim's husband Amar Singh, her brother-in-law Gurpreet Singh, her sister-in-law Kulwinder Kaur of Hariewala in this connection on the statement of Parkash Kaur at Baghapurana police station. However, further investigation is underway at the moment," said the police official.
