Woman found dead; husband booked for murder

The body of a 35-year-old married woman was found in her house under mysterious circumstances on Monday morning, after which the police registered a case of murder against her husband.

The deceased, Neelam Sharma, a resident of Model Town in Kapurthala, was married to Arvind Sharma in 2000 and had two sons.

The police said when they reached the spot at around 7.40am, the 35-year-old’s body was found lying on the floor and a cloth was hanging from a ceiling fan.

Her in-laws claimed that she committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan. On the other side, deceased’s father Col Subhash Chandar Sharma (retired) alleged in his complaint that Arvind was demanding dowry from him, due to which the latter allegedly murdered his daughter.

As per information, Neelam for some days was at her father’s house where she had gone to get `2 lakh demanded by Arvind to buy a car. On Sunday evening, when she reached empty-handed, her husband harassed her, it was claimed.

On Monday morning, her in-laws informed that Neelam’s father that she had committed suicide.

Jagjit Singh Saroya, superintendent of police (detective), said that the the victim’s body had been sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem.

“It will be clear only after post-mortem whether the deceased had committed suicide or it was murder,” he said.

On the complaint of the deceased’s father, the police have registered a case under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code at the city police station.
