After three people threw acid on a married woman at Bhiwanigarh on Sunday, the police arrested one of the suspects, Mangat Ram alias Bittu, who reportedly had an affair with the victim, Harpreet Kaur.

The victim received several burn injuries and was rushed to the local government hospital, from where doctors referred her to Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.

SHO, Bhiwanigarh police station, Sanjeev Goyal said as per the statement of the victim's sister, Sukhjit Kaur, the suspect reportedly was in a relationship with the victim before her marriage. Harpreet was married to a Bhiwanigarh resident four years ago.

Sukhjit Kaur told the police that the incident happened in the afternoon, when three people, including Mangat Ram, knocked at the door of their house and identified themselves as officials of the market committee.

The police said the moment Harpreet opened the door they threw acid on her and fled on a motorcycle. She received injuries on her chest, arms and neck.

The SHO said the police have started investigation and have been working on several theories to nab the other accused at the earliest.

“We have been interrogating the arrested suspect to know the reason behind his act,” he said.

A case under Sections 326-A (burns body of a person or causes grievous hurt by throwing acid) of the IPC has been registered.
