Samana (Patiala): Three days after a woman jumped into a canal, reportedly after being subjected to sustained harassment by her alcoholic husband, the police have booked six people, including the husband, under the charges of abetment to suicide.

On Thursday, Sunita Rani had jumped into the Bhakra Canal on the Bhawanigarh road. Her body was later fished out by the locals and the police was informed.

Finally, the police took cognisance of the incident of Sunday and registered a case against Rani’s husband Karamjeet Singh at the Samana City police station. The other five booked in connection with the case are all from the in-law family. Their names as registered in the police record are Harbans Singh, Aaso Rani, Rekha Rani, Gelho and Lali Nath.

“Sunita and Karamjeet Singh had been going through a strained period in their relationship for some time as Karmajeet was an alcoholic and sometimes thrashed her wife too. Their dispute had also been raised at the panchayat, but no permanent solution could be found,” a source in the police department said.

Samana City station house officer Rajesh Malhotra said, “We have registered a case against the relatives of the deceased, including the husband. Preliminary investigation is on. The accused, who are absconding, have been booked under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.”
