A convict is languishing in the womens’ jail of Ludhiana Central Jail for the past three years, as there is no one to fill the security bonds and other formalities regarding her bail.
Jail officials said, “The convict, Gianea, 65, was arrested by Government Railway Police from Ludhiana railway station under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2008 and was sentenced for 10-year imprisonment. Gianea, who hails from Bihar, has already completed seven years and was granted bail by the high court on July 6, 2015. However, there was no one from her side to fill the necessary formalities. Moreover, no one from her family had come to meet her in the past seven years.”
An NGO has now come forward and claimed that they will find the relative of the woman to help her.
Advocate Gaganpreet Singh, president of HELP, the NGO which is helping the convict, said, “We are trying to find the convicts’ relatives and will help her in bail. We have also started finding those cases where the accused have no one to fill their formalities.”
Jail superintendent Damanjeet Walia said, “She never claimed to have received any letter from her house. Moreover, she does not have any mobile number of her relatives or family members.”
