The Municipal Corporation (MC) carried out an anti-encroachment drive here on Tuesday, demolishing illegal buildings at various places within the city, but, during the drive, a woman building inspector was manhandled by a district-level politician at Sabowal village.
The demolition drive started from Central-Town Mandi, where a shop, which was being constructed illegally near a temple, was bulldozed.
However, things took an ugly turn at a village near the Urban Estate where Kamaljeet Kaur Multani, former district president (rural) of the Punjab Mahila Congress, tried to intervene with the official work of the MC and stop the team from demolishing a few shops, which were built illegally in the village.
The MC officials, who were present there, didn't have any woman police officer with them and, hence, they asked Gurinder Kaur, a woman building officer, present on the spot, to deal with Multani.
When the building inspector intervened, Multani lost her cool and a scuffle broke out between the two and the official was physically attacked. It was only after the help of the police officials and the MC staff present on the spot that the two were separated and the quarrel was stopped and the policemen present there warned the former politician.
Gurinder, perplexed after the sudden attack on her, said that she would file a complaint against Multani for manhandling an on-duty official.
Meanwhile, another building, which was adjacent to the shops being razed, developed some cracks. The residents of the building, which developed cracks, also came out on the road and started protesting against the demolition drive, but the police acted swiftly and the situation was brought under control.
The drive was carried out under the supervision of assistant town planner Ramesh Chhabra, who has been in the limelight for the past few days for carrying out the demolition drive. The MC team also razed a building in the Green Park here, which was being built for commercial purpose.
Ramesh Chhabra said, "These kind of minor scuffles are a routine when illegal structures are bulldozed. Overall, today's anti-encroachment drive was carried out peacefully."
