A mother-daughter duo was caught red-handed replacing gold rings worth Rs 1 lakh with artifical rings at Sham Jewellers in Sector 34 late on Friday evening.
Courtesy: CCTV footage of the daughter and her brother that was already circulated after they committed a similar crime at another jewellery shop in July.
The two women have been identified as Rita Verma, 50, and Aradhna Verma, 24, of Jammu. They were handed over to the police. Rita’s son Ankush Verma, however, was able to flee along with the two gold rings replaced by them.
The trio visited Sham Jewellers on Friday, where a salesman saw them changing the tag of a ring. He also saw the youth leaving the premises. On suspicion, he stopped the women. The shop owner, Harinder Singh, checked the pictures circulated by the owner of Sunder Jewellers, Sector 35, on WhatsApp after a similar crime at the latter’s establishment on July 26.
Aradhna and Ankush were found in these pictures, though they had a different woman accomplice during the crime at Sector 35, when they had allegedly replaced gold rings worth Rs 80,000. Sunder Jewellers’ owner Mahender Khurana, too, confirmed they were the same persons.
A case under Sections 380 (theft) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused at the Sector-34 police station.
