A newly-married woman, Manjit Kaur (24), a resident of Mohar village, was murdered by unidentified assailants near Makhe Chehlan village of Mansa district on Saturday evening.

She and her husband, Makkhan Singh, 26, were on their way to Barnala from Mansa, when they were attacked. Surprisingly, the husband is unhurt and has claimed that he had stopped their motorcycle to relieve himself.

The couple has married only a month ago and faced opposition from their families, forcing them to shift to Barnala.

Makkhan is an employee with a private telecom mobile tower maintenance company. The police are not ruling out the possibility of honour killing and are questioning the families of the victim, the husband Makkhan and his family.

A case has been registered under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC against unidentified people at Joga police station.
