Robbers hacked to death a woman and her son with sharp-edged weapons at their residence at Bagh Wali Gali in Fatehgarh Churian town of Gurdaspur district on Monday morning and decamped with all the cash and jewellery lying in the house.
Iqbal Singh, the deceased woman's husband, who runs an electronics shop in the town, had been away to meet his sister at Jagadhari (Haryana) for the past three days.
On Monday morning, Robin, who works at Iqbal Singh's shop, came to his house to collect the shop keys and found the front gate open. Inside the house, Iqbal's wife Malkiat Kaur and their son Lovepreet Singh were found lying in a pool of blood on a bed, their throats slit. The locks of all almirahs were broken and various items were lying scattered.
On receiving information, Fatehgarh Churian SHO Rajesh Kakkar rushed to the spot and sent the two bodies to the civil hospital for a post-mortem.
Talking to HT, Kakkar said that during the initial investigation, it was learnt that robbers barged into the house around 8.30 am. When they were spotted by Malkiat, they overpowered her and hacked her to death. They later also killed her son who was asleep.
The exact amount of cash and jewellery taken away by the robbers is yet to be ascertained.
The police suspect that the accused knew that Iqbal was out of town.
Lovepreet was studying in Class 12, while his elder brother is doing MBBS in a medical college in New Delhi.
Batala SSP Vikram Pal Singh Bhatti and SP (headquarters) Jatinder Singh Mand also reached the house and inspected the spot.
