Soon after a 29-year-old woman stalked by two men — one of them is Haryana BJP president’s son — took to Facebook and shared her harrowing experience of being “almost kidnapped” in Chandigarh, a cross-section of people were quick to react.

Most people on social media hailed her for being “brave”. Her post, put up around 2pm, had received more than 1,000 reactions and was shared more than 700 times by 9.30 pm. Many users expressed shock that such an incident could take place in Chandigarh, while others praised her presence of mind too.

“More power to you and your family!” wrote one of the Facebook users in the comments, also writing about possible pressures since the main accused is the Haryana BJP chief’s son, “While I expect the incumbent [BJP] government to give you a hard time over this, I’m sure you’re well equipped to come out on top. This is not the city a lot of us grew up in and good on you for ensuring it stays that way.”

Another user wrote, “I do have goosebumps after reading this but i do want to let you know that we are all really proud of you. It wasn’t an easy situation to handle but i m glad you used your presence of mind and kept yourself together. Hats off!”

Many on Twitter also expressed their anguish over the incident and praised the woman. There were many users who applauded the Chandigarh police for the timely action, as did the woman herself. “Thank God it was Chandigarh. Had it been Haryana, she would have not found a cop even she searched 3 days flat,” tweeted a user.

Her father’s Facebook post received overwhelmed reactions too. “Thank you very much for being very logical and reasonable [...] whole Haryana Punjab will stand with you. I am father of two daughters i can realise the gravity of situation. I will stand with you,” wrote a user.

“The drunk stalker son of Haryana BJP Chief was arrested only because the girl is the daughter of senior IAS officer,” tweeted lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan.
