Woman strangulated to death over dowry, husband booked

The body of a 19-year-old woman was found in the slum area near Jagraon bridge on Wednesday.


A passerby informed the police, who rushed to the spot and found that the victim was strangulated to death with a rope, which was also found lying nearby.

The police said the victim, Reema, a resident of slums near Jagraon bridge, had married Ravi six months ago. After the marriage, Ravi and his parents Sompal and Prema started harassing her and forced her to bring money from her parents.

After recording the statement of the neighbours, the division number 8 police registered a case under sections 302 (murder) and 498 (dowry) against Reema's husband and in-laws.

Assistant sub-inspector Sukhwinder Singh said a case had been registered against the three accused and police were trying to find them. The reason behind the murder was said to be dowry.

The division number 8 police have initiated investigation in the case and the body has been sent for the post-mortem examination.

Ravi is a member of marriage band and was not earning well as a result he forced his wife to bring more money.
