Though the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is hoping to replicate its Delhi assembly elections performance in the Gurgaon Lok Sabha polls, till now the party’s prospects weren’t looking skyward as far as donations were concerned.
But the party’s coffers received a huge boost on Saturday with more than Rs 15 lakh being collected as part of the “Dinner with Yogendra Yadav” fund- raising event. According to a party spokesperson, Saturday’s event saw 70 people come forward and book their seats at the dinner table which were on offer at Rs 20,000 per head."We were a little sceptical about the response at first, especially after the cancellation of ‘Coffee with Yogendra Yadav’. But more than 70 people came forward to be part of the event with some even booking entire tables," said Nisha Singh, the spokesperson for AAP.
“This was perhaps the last fund-raising event here for the party before the elections, mainly because the election is really near,” Singh added.
After the success of similar fund-raising dinners in Delhi for its seven candidates there, the AAP had decided to organise such an evening in Gurgaon as well. While the party had earlier planned a “Coffee with Yogendra Yadav” for Rs 5,000 for each participant, the plan had to be cancelled due to its collision with Arvind Kejriwal’s roadshow on the same day.
The party then organised the “Coffee with Yogendra Yadav” fund-raiser on March 8 at a private institute and collected only Rs 6.58 lakh. While most of the participants there had paid Rs 5,000 each, others paid even less.
