An unmarried young couple was found dead on the railway track near Bajida village in Karnal district on Sunday morning. The deceased have been identified as Amarjit Pal (21) and Priyanka alias Reena (18), both residents of Daha Jagir village. The deceased were distantly related and their bodies were recovered their native village.

Amarjit was working in a private company while Priyanka was a student of Class 12. Their mutilated bodies were first noticed by the villagers on Sunday morning and the police suspect that the incident could have occurred on late Saturday night.

Station house officer (SHO) of the Government Railway Police (GRP), Karnal, Ajay Kumar, said that prima facie it seemed to be a case of suicide.

"Initial inputs say that the couple had an affair. But as they belonged to the same clan, their respective families could have disapproved the relationship. Though no foul play is suspected in the crime, we are investigating the matter from various angles," said the SHO.

Investigators were yet to question the family members of the deceased in detail, he said.
