Punjab Youth Congress chief Vikram Chaudhary has condemned the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) for paying homage to Beant Singh, an assassin of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, at the Golden Temple complex on Wednesday.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, he said the paying of homage to the assassin of Gandhi by the SGPC at the behest of SAD, that too on the premises of the Golden Temple complex, has again exposed the double standards of the SAD-BJP government.

He said, "They accuse the Congress of raising such issues which they call trivial. But they cannot shy away from the fact that such ceremonies do not allow us to put the traumatic past to rest."
Chaudhary said that eulogising the assassins as "Quami Shaheed" and "martyrs of Sikh Panth" seemed to be the political diplomacy by the Akali Dal and its leaders, which went with their attitude of appeasing the radicals.

"The real martyrs are leaders like Indira Gandhi, former chief minister Beant Singh and innumerable innocents who paid a heavy price by giving their lives for the unity and integrity of the country," he added.
