Senior youth Congress leader Gurpreet Singh Bittu Brar, 32, of Khote village in Moga district was killed on Wednesday morning when his car collided head-on with a heavy truck near Nihal Singh Wala.
Brar was nephew of the former Congress minister Darshan Singh Brar. The accident occurred when he was on his way home from Nihal Singh Wala in a Maruti Ritz car with his friends Kulwinder Singh and Gurjepal Singh, both of Khote village. It was the truck that ran over the car near the Patto Heera Singh link road, Inderjit Singh, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Nihal Singh Wala police, has said.
Bittu Brar was killed on the spot, while passers-by moved injured Kulwinder Singh and Gurjepal Singh to a hospital nearby. The truck driver fled the spot but now he is charged under Sections 279 (rash driving on public highway), 337 (endangering the personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous injuries by dangerous behaviour) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
In another accident, Harpreet Kaur, 15, a girl from Dallewal village in Faridkot district was killed on Wednesday evening near Fatehgarh Korotana village.
Manpreet Singh of Pukar Kalan, Gurmeet Singh of Loham (Ferozepur) and Harpreet Kaur were in a Mauti Esteem car and heading from Moga to Fatehgarh Korotana for joining the Gurpurb Nagar Kirtan programme when the accident occurred. "Manpreet Singh lost control of the car and crashed it into a tractor-trailer coming from the opposite side. Harpreet was killed on the spot, while Manpreet Singh and Gurmeet Singh were injured seriously," said a police officer. "The injured were first moved to Dr Mathura Dass Civil Hospital in Moga and then referred to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana because of their critical condition."
