The Punjab Youth Congress would start 'Kisaan Satyagraha' agitation programme to protest against the NDA government for bringing in the Land Acquisition Ordinance, 2014, through an undemocratic route, Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, president of Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) said on Tuesday.

He said as Indian Youth Congress had decided to launch a nationwide 'Kisaan Satyagraha' to protest against anti-farmer amendments in the existing act through the Land Acquisition Ordinance, 2014.

Chaudhary said farmers were facing hardship due to inadequate increase in minimum support price (MSP), shortage of urea, inadequate compensation package and increase in taxes on petroleum products.

He said by enacting changes through ordinance, the BJP government had removed the consent clause provided to the farmers and landowners in the earlier law.

He said there were already many profit-monger private players in the economic corridors and road and highways and now with the announcement of foreign direct investment (FDI) in defense areas profit-seeking private players would snatch big chunk of land with the help of the new law.

The PYC chief said it was seen for years that land mafia bought more land than what was actually needed for a particular project and sold it later with a good profit.

He said it was provided in the earlier law that if a piece of a land was not used for the said purpose within five years then the land would be returned to its actual owner but now the BJP government had removed the clause and raised the bar to 10 years instead of five years.

He said retail prices of petrol and diesel had not come down proportionately despite the fact that international crude oil prices had come down from $110 per barrel in May 2014 to $56 per barrel.

He further said 'Kisaan Satyagraha' would also cover all unfulfilled promises made by the Modi government during Lok Sabha election campaign 2014.

He said the Youth Congress had a responsibility towards rights and dues of the farmers and tribal and it would hold massive protest against the BJP government for them.
