A youth has been arrested for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl at her house at Lahauriya Mohalla on Bukanwala road here on Wednesday.
According to police, the accused, Kishan Singh, a resident of Kotkapura, who was living with a relative in the neighbourhood, went to the house of the girl, who was alone home, and committed the crime. Her mother, who works as a maid, and father, who is a labourer, were out for work at the time of the incident.
When her mother returned from work, she found the girl bleeding and rushed her to the local civil hospital. However, as there was no gynaecologist present there, her treatment was delayed.
SHO Harinder Singh Dod of the city south police station said the medico-legal report was issued in the evening, so the police were not able to register a case, but they arrested the accused in the evening.
Dr Balwinder Singh, medical officer, civil hospital, said the medical examination had confirmed the rape.
Meanwhile, Punjab Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee chief Malti Thapar alleged that the victim, who was critical, was admitted to the emergency ward of the civil hospital around 11am but there was no gynaecologist present for treatment.
