Angered by his parents' opposition to his relationship with a girl, an 18-year-old boy killed his mother by lacing her drink with poison, while his father had a narrow escape as he spit the milk out due to its bitter taste, at Akhara village in Jagraon, 46km from here, on Tuesday night.
The boy, Joga Singh, has been arrested along with his 16-year-old girlfriend who allegedly instigated the act.
According to the villagers, Joga and the girl, both school dropouts, were neighbours and were in a relationship since long. Joga's father Sant Ram, 52, who works as a farm labourer, and mother Gurmail Kaur, 45, had been pressuring Joga, a brick-kiln worker, to break up with her.
The girl allegedly suggested that Joga kill his parents by poisoning the milk they had every night before going to sleep.
On Tuesday night, Joga acted as per the plan.
But while Gurmail Kaur had the milk, Sant Ram spit the bitter-tasting milk out. As Gurmail Kaur soon showed signs of poisoning, Sant Ram rushed her to a nearby hospital with the help of some neighbours. She was referred to the civil hospital in Jagraon but could not survive.
Meanwhile, suspecting that Joga may have laced the milk with poison, Sant Ram alerted the villagers back home who caught hold of Joga and the girl and called the police. "We are interrogating the two teenagers. This is quite unfortunate," said Jagraon senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Toor. Both have been booked for murder.
