Reflecting the increasing crime in the city, two motorcycle-borne men allegedly stabbed to death a 25-year-old man after he resisted their move to rob him in Salem Tabri on late Wednesday night.

The victim has been identified as Sumit, a resident of Salem Tabri.

In his complaint to police, Subhash, Sumit’s maternal uncle, said he and Sumit were taking a walk after dinner near the vegetable market in Salem Tabri. In the meantime, two motorcycle-borne youths approached them on the pretext of asking for a matchstick to light a cigarette. But they instead tried to rob them of their valuables. Subhash alleged that when they resisted, the duo started beating them and in the melee took out a sharp-edged weapon and stabbed Sumit, before fleeing the spot.

Sumit was rushed to the civil hospital by his relatives, but doctors declared him brought dead. Subash also suffered injuries in the incident.

Agitated over the incident, Sumit’s relatives and residents of Salem Tabri protested at the Clock Tower on Thursday, demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

A case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the unidentified accused, and police have initiated investigation.
