Local Akali leader Sukhdev Kalyan is accused of murdering a youth who had dared to expose his alleged drugsmuggling business to the police.

On Tuesday night, victim Arjun Kumar (22) of Ali Mohalla and his friend, Rahul, were attacked with sharp-edged weapons outside Naaz cinema house on the old GT Road here. “Around 10pm, Kalyan ‘Chirhi’; his son, Shiv; brother, Suraj and five others accomplices, including one Sikander, came out of a street shouting at Arjun, who told them to stop selling drugs to young people,” the victim’s brother, Ashwani Kumar (40), stated in his police complaint (HT has a copy).

“Within seconds, they pounced on him, and when Rahul intervened, they attacked him as well,” stated Ashwani Kumar. A case under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 (common intent in crime) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against Akali leader Kalyan and three other people at police station-2.

On Wednesday, 50 auto-parts dealers near Ali Mohalla closed their shops apprehending tension after the murderous attack on the previous night. Police are deployed near Bhagwan Balmiki Temple and the civil hospital, where the body was brought for autopsy. The doctors who conducted the post-mortem examination said Arjun had died of sharp-edged-weapon injuries around his neck. Moved to the trauma centre of the hospital, Rahul is said to be out of danger. The attack happened near a police station and the civil hospital where security is present all the time.

Arjun’s family accused Kalyan of being involved in drug trade in its locality. Sources in the police have said that based on the last mobile-phone location of the main accused, a raid was conducted in Jalandhar Cantonment on Wednesday.

“We have rounded up and interrogated two men from the cantonment who had given shelter to Kalyan after the attack,” said additional de puty commissioner of police (ADCP-1) Naresh Kumar Dogra.
