A youth tried to commit suicide by consuming a poisonous substance here on Wednesday evening as he was allegedly being pressurised and harassed by the police to compel him to reach a compromise with the in-laws of his sister, who has accused them of harassing her for bringing more dowry.
However, the police have termed it an attempt to blackmail them and started proceedings against the youth.
As per information, Balwinder Singh of Dhani Dandewali in Abohar, allegedly consumed some poison in the parking of the office of the deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Abohar, when they were called by the police to amicably resolve the issue with in-laws of his sister. Later on, he was hospitalised.
His sister Kuldeep Kaur alleged that her in-laws were harassing her to fetch more dowry and when she could not, they tried to strangulate her. She said despite repeated attempts, the police did not initiate any action against the accused and rather kept on compelling them to reach a compromise with them.
Due to harassment by the police, her brother took some poisonous substance to end his life, she alleged.
When contacted, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Fazilka Swapan Sharma denied any police pressure on them to for a compromise.
The SSP said the woman had accused her in-laws of torturing her and shown some injury marks on her body allegedly inflicted by members of the in-laws' family. However, on cross-checking, the marks were found to be self-inflicted, the SSP said.
He said when they were going to take legal action against the brother-sister duo, the village panchayat sought an apology for them and pleaded for an amicable settlement in the case. This is why the DSP had called both the parties for discussion, said SSP.
But, Balwinder tried to play smart and consumed some tablets of disprin, said SSP.
Now the police would take action according to law, said the SSP.
