The integrated centre of Jharkhand Bhavan in New Delhi plans to launch a three digit emergency number for state girls victimised in the national capital, social welfare department officials said on Monday.

Besides, the state government would also train the girls before they leave for Delhi to keep them updated about the security provisions.

These initiatives were proposed at a meeting at Jharkhand Bhavan between state social welfare secretary Mridula Sinha, nodal officer of social welfare department deputed at Jharkhand Bhavan Kala Nath, members of non-government organisations and other officials.

“Now, Jharkhand has a proper body in Delhi to deal with the cases of trafficking and help the girls in need. Proper training to the girls and an emergency number for them will help curb the atrocities against Jharkhand girls in Delhi,”
said Sinha.

At least 10,000 girls, usually tribal minors, are trafficked from Jharkhand to different parts of the country, especially Delhi, every year, claim civil society organisations.

A majority of these girls are subjected to physical and sexual torture. While most of the trafficked girls work as domestic helps, some even land in brothels, claim NGOs. The facilities, however, will not only be available for girls working as domestic maids but also for those working in IT firms and other companies.

The Jharkhand Bhawan will host another meeting on June 23 to further discuss plan of action.

Sinha said the girls before they leave for Delhi would get lessons on manners, use of household appliances, and also tips on when and how to contact the help desk.

A training centre for these girls will come up at Kanke Road in Ranchi.
Besides, civil society organisation Shakti Vahini has proposed to start training centres at Khunti and Gumla, sources said.

The department has also proposed to enforce a rule that will help the Jharkhand Bhavan get information about hiring of any Jharkhand girl, she said.
