The Jharkhand police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested on Tuesday evening a 2014 Burdwan blast accused, a key operative of Bangladesh-based terrorist outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), from Ranchi-Ramgarh district border.
Tariq-ul-Islam alias Shadik alias Soman, a resident of Murshidabad district of Bengal, was arrested on a National Investigation Agency (NIA) warrant, police said.
Jharkhand additional director general of police (Operations) SN Pradhan said the arrest was the first success of the state ATS. Though the Jharkhand ATS would be operational by mid-October, this operation was a test for the team, police said.
“A team led by superintendent of police P Murugan nabbed Islam while he was travelling on the Ranchi-Ramgarh highway,” said Pradhan.
In October last, a blast in a Burdwan house exposed the JMB manufacturing unit for improvised explosive devices. The blast killed two JMB terrorists and injured one. The NIA recovered 39 bombs from the debris of the house.
On a tip-off from the NIA and the West Bengal police a trace was put on Islam, his car was intercepted on the highway,”said he said.
Police said Islam was an influential leader in the JMB and was key in arranging bomb-making equipment for the outfit and training youngsters.
Pradhan said Islam was married to a girl in Jharkhand’s Sahibganj district and used areas on the West Bengal-Jharkhand border for hiding.
“After his arrest he was brought to Ranchi for interrogations,” said Pradhan.
This is the third arrest of a JMB operative from Jharkhand this year. In January, Rejaul Karim was arrested from Sahibganj and in April Pakur police arrested Ibrahim Shekh.
