All India Congress Committee (AICC) vice-president Rahul Gandhi will campaign in Godda district of Jharkhand instead of Khunti on April 1.
State Congress media in-charge Shailesh Sinha confirmed the new development on Friday. He said Rahul’s Gumla rally on the same day would cover Khunti as they are adjoining districts and fall under the Chhotanagpur division.
“Godda was confirmed as it is a part of the Santhal Parganas and the Congress needs to reach out to the voters there,” Sinha added.
“There is no change of dates. The rallies will be held on April 1. We have only shifted the location to cover a larger area,” he said. Sinha added that the rally was shifted from Khunti to Godda to ensure that Rahul’s voice was heard in the Santhal Parganas which is not much frequented by political leaders.
As part of his campaign, Rahul would endorse Congress candidate Dr Rameshwar Oraon from Lohardaga and Furkan Ansari from Godda.
Congress leaders said the party and its allies - JMM and RJD - were confident of winning 11 out of 14 seats. The Congress has fielded its candidates in nine constituencies, JMM in four and RJD in one. Congress MP from Banswara-Dungarpur in Madhya Pradesh Tarachand Bhagora, who was on a visit to Jharkhand, said, “We are confident that the Congress and its allies will win 11 seats in Jharkhand.”
However, he did not mention the names of those seats where there is a chance of the party losing. “We are working hard in those constituencies where our base is weak,”
“We have passed important bills like RTI and Food Security Bill which were opposed by the BJP,” he said.
