In one of her strongest attacks on Narendra Modi, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday asked people not to elect “a big liar” as the country’s next prime minister.
Without taking Modi’s name, Gandhi told an election rally in Jharkhand that some opposition leaders were selling dreams, as if “they will change everything in one day with a magic wand”. “Will the country choose a prime minister a person who will be a big liar?” she said at Ramgarh in Hazaribagh district. “In a democracy, just anyone should not be allowed to grab power,” she said.
In her 11-minute speech, Gandhi urged Maoists in Jharkhand to give up arms and join the mainstream. She also appealed to coal workers in the constituency and across the state to support the Congress.
Gandhi arrived at the local Sidho-Kanho Maidan around 12.45 pm when the scorching sun was at its full fury burning the skin of rally supporters.
“I am grateful to you. Despite the heat this is a big turnout. It shows your affinity towards the Congress,” said the Congress president, addressing a crowd of around 4,000 people.
While seeking votes for her party candidate, Gandhi attacked BJP for levelling false allegation of the Congress polarizing votes along communal lines.
Counting the achievements of prime minister, Manmohan Singh led government she said, “They (BJP) say we have done nothing. It is the Congress that has given the country the right to information and food.” She attacked the BJP for delaying release of its manifesto.
“We promise free medicine, treatment, pension for old and security to women. An opposition sans manifesto is a party without aim, a rudderless boat,” said Gandhi.
Gandhi seemed guarded in her speech and restrained herself from indulging in vitriolic jabs that have become commonplace in election rhetoric of late.
