Ranchi: Before the big battle on April 17 for Ranchi seat, a fight for the poll symbols among independents and candidates of unrecognised parties ensued at the district collectorate on Saturday.
After withdrawal of one nomination, a total of 28 candidates are in poll fray for Ranchi seat. Six candidates are from national and state recognised parties, 11 from unrecognised parties while 11 are independent candidates.
There were a series of symbols for selection by the candidates. Even so, the returning officer (RO) for Ranchi LS constituency Vinay Kumar Choubey had to take help of lottery for symbol allotments among candidates.
For example, Ranjit Mahato and Lal Jatindra Dev had been fighting for the cot symbol, which finally went to Lal Jatindra Dev through lottery. Similarly, Arshad Ayub and Abdul Hassan fought for ceiling fan symbol. Arshad got the symbol through lottery while Hassan had to be satisfied with the scissor symbol.
The symbols included battery torch, diesel pump, pen nib, telephone, television, table, batsman, gas cylinder and lady’s purse. Most candidates, who received the election symbols of their choice, started posing for the shutterbugs.
Independent candidate Anajani Pandey, who got the diesel pump symbol, said, “During the Congress party regime, price of petrol and diesel have increased manifold. If I became Ranchi MP, I will fight against price rise of fuel.”
Choubey, who is the Ranchi deputy commissioner, said that poll preparation was in full swing. “We have made elaborate arrangements like micro observer, webcasting, digital and video photography to keep close vigil on the 2,291 polling booths,” he said. The DC added, “There will be live telecast of 60 polling booths on the Youtube.”
Meanwhile, nomination filing for the last phase poll of Jharkhand began with issuance of notification on Saturday. Nomination filing for four seats - Rajmahal, Dumka, Godda and Dhanbad - will conclude on April 5. Elections will take place on April 24 in these seats. Scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled on April 7 while last date of withdrawal is April 9.
