A 10-year-old girl from Khunti district, who was employed as domestic help at a house in Chandigarh, has alleged she was confined and tortured by her employers. The child was spotted by Delhi cops at Kashmiri Gate in the Capital after she managed to escape from her employers’ house and boarded a bus to the city.
Police then called up an NGO, Shakti Vahini, to rescue the child and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Khunti was informed. AHTU team brought the girl back to Ranchi on June 3.
On Sunday, the girl was sent to her house. Aradhana Singh, AHTU in-charge of Khunti, said the girl on Saturday was produced before the deputy commissioner, who has given her family assurance to take care of her education.
“The girl is now with her father, who accompanied us to Delhi for the rescue operation,” said Singh. During counselling, the girl revealed she had worked for four months at her Chandigarh-based employer’s house, where she was kept locked up and beaten up regularly. Her head was shaved and she was hit with leather belts, she said.
She alleged her employers had even changed her name to conceal her identity. She escaped one night when the employers had accidentally left the door open. She then went to the local bus stand, where vendors and hawkers helped her collect money for a bus ticket to Delhi, the girl said.
The AHTU has nabbed local agent Phaguni, who had trafficked the girl to Chandigarh. The agent has been booked under Section 370 (buying or disposing of any person as a slave) of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
