A teenage girl was decapitated in front of her parents on Sunday night by her jilted lover in Jharkhand’s Jehiletand village, around 55 kilometres north of Ranchi, police said.
Amin Ansari (26), a mechanic, attacked and killed Pushpa Tiru (19) with a machete. He was then chased and caught by Pushpa’s mother Sharda Devi and other villagers and handed over to the police.
The police have said that Ansari alleged he was Pushpa’s lover for the past one year and was shocked to hear of her impending marriage. However, Ansari’s claim was rejected by the girl’s family members.
In her FIR, Devi said that Ansari’s family had earlier threatened to kidnap Pushpa if she was not married to Ansari. “He had threatened me too. It was a one sided affair that my daughter didn’t approve,” said Kinu Tiru, the deceased’s father.
Khelari police station-in-charge Harindar Kumar Rai told Hindustan Times that Ansari was suffering from depression. “Villagers said that Ansari used to stalk Pushpa and on many occasions she had complained to her parents,” Rai said.
Rai added that Ansari’s family members claimed Pushpa had met the assailant a number of times. “We have arrested Ansari and recovered the murder weapon. He has accepted the crime,” Rai said.
The crime also caused tension in the area, resulting in a minor scuffle between the police and villagers.
Last week, Shalini Agarwal, the daughter of noted businessman Pradip Agarwal, was strangulated and drowned by her lover for rejecting his marriage proposal in Jharkhand’s Dumka district.
