Jharkhand to go for four-phase panchayat polls from Nov 22

The Jharkhand election commission on Thursday declared the dates for the four-phase panchayat elections, which will be held over two months starting from November.

The state election commission on Thursday declared the dates for the four-phase panchayat elections, which will be held over two months starting from November.

The polls, the second since the state was formed in 2000, will begin from November 22 and end on December 12.

Announcing the dates, state election commissioner Shiv Basant said the first of the four- phase polls for the three-tier panchayat bodies will begin from November 22. The polling dates for the second, third and last phase are November 28, December 5 and December 12 respectively.

Polling will begin from 7 am and continue till 3pm, he said.

The polling will be held to elect 4402 mukhiyas, 5423 panchayat ward samitis and 545 zila parishad committees. A single voter would have to cast four votes to directly elect mukhiya, panchayat samiti members and Zila Parishad member.

The elected panchayat samitis and zila parishad representatives will elect the respective panchayat pramukh and zila parishad chairman.

With the official announcement of rural poll dates, the model code of conduct has come into effect across the state (excluding municipality areas), he said, adding that ongoing central and state government schemes can continue, however, the government cannot start new schemes in the panchayat areas.

Notification for the phase will be made on October 23 and October 30 will be the last date of filing nominations. Scrutiny will take place on October 31 to November 2. Candidates can withdraw nominations till November 4. The state election commission (SEC) will allot symbols on November 5. Polling will be held on November 22 and results for the first phase will be announced on December 6.

For the second phase, notification will be issued on October 29 and the last date for filing nominations will be November 5. Scrutiny will take place from November 6 to November 9. Candidates can withdraw nominations till November 12. The SEC will allot symbols on November 14. Polling will be held on November 28.

Poll notification for the 3rd phase will be made on November 5 and November 12 will be the last date of filing nominations. Scrutiny will take place from November 14 to November 16. Candidates can withdraw nominations till November 19. The SEC will allot symbols on November 20. Polling will be held on December 5.

The last phase poll notification will be done on November 12. November 20 will be the last date of filing nominations. Scrutiny will take place from November 21 to November 23. Candidates can withdraw nominations till November 26. The SEC will allot symbols on November 27. Polling will be held on December 12.

The results for the first and second phase will be announced on December 6. While the results of the third and fourth phase will be declared on December 13 and December 19 respectively.
