There was an increase in voter turnout in Lohardaga which went to polls amidst tight security on Thursday. The polling percentage scaled up by around 6%, following efforts made by the EC to attract voters. In all, 59% voters exercised their franchise.
The rise is polling percentage was encouraging in a constituency which lacks higher education, job opportunities and poor civic amenities a teacher said.
Polling was by and large peaceful, except a few stray incidents, returning officer Veena Srivastav said. Suspected Maoists carried out blasts in Bamda forest. However, there were no casualties, Lohardaga SP Bhimsen Tuti said.
Voter enthusiasm was visible from early morning as they turned up to vote. Polling was held from 7am to 4pm. Nine candidates are in the fray. Prominent are BJP MP Sudarshan Bhagat, Rameshwar Oraon (Congress), Chamra Linda (Trinamool) and Birendra Bhagat (JVM-P).
